Scala Ciro DOC Rosso Classico Superiore
Scala’s striking retro labels evoke effortless Italian cool and demand attention. The wines are made in Calabria in the toe of Italy’s boot, where native varieties reign supreme – Magliocco, Nerello, Mantonico, Greco and the region’s star grape, Gaglioppo. We spoke to Francesco and Tiziana Scala about mastering these indigenous grape varietues.
The focus at this family-run winery is very much on quality over quantity. Owned by farmers since the 17th century, the winery is a boutique heaven for Ciro lovers. Their intense, fragrant reds and brightly elegant whites really deserve a taste.
Ruby-red colour, it has a powerful and persistent fragrance of red fruits and a touch of sweet spice. Well-balanced and harmonic, Scala Ciro Classico Superiore offers us flavours of strawberry, cherry and a very fine spicy backdrop. We are assured this is typical Gaglioppo, but as this is the first time we've encountered this grape, we had to take Scala's word for it!
This is a brilliant wine to pair with hard italian cheeses or Fillets Rossini.
